FFP2 masks: effective protection against environmental influences

Unlike a mouthguard, which only serves to protect others from infection, the respirator additionally protects its wearer. Depending on the FFP standard, a respirator prevents both the spread of certain viruses by the wearer and their infection. FFP2 respirators are used in the medical field and in special work environments. These include, for example, nurseries, the pharmaceutical industry, the metalworking industry, crafts, rescue services or the fire department.

The protective function of FFP2 masks

FFP2 respirators protect the wearer and his or her environment from infection with risk group 2 viruses, such as the influenza virus, numerous variants of the norovirus, and various forms of the human herpes virus. Furthermore, FFP2 respirators prevent non-fibrogenic dust or fibrogenic particles from being inhaled. The spread and inhalation of aerosols is also prevented.

FFP2 masks supplement the personal protective equipment in hospitals, in geriatric care or on construction sites, for example. The employer must check very carefully in advance whether such a mask is suitable for the respective working environment. The basis for this is the risk assessment. This records the nature of the risk to employees, how exposed they may be and how long the potential hazard will last.
