Mouthguards for adults: Preventing infections in the professional and private environment
When speaking, coughing or sneezing, fine particles enter the environment which may contain pathogens. A medical mouthguard reduces the risk of infection from droplets or aerosols and is particularly important in health and care settings to protect patients and those in need of care. To a limited extent, disposable masks also provide protection for staff themselves by intercepting splashes of infectious body fluids. Since the beginning of the Corona pandemic, experts have recommended that masks also be worn in private settings to help contain the spread of the virus.
Mouthguard as a medical device: types and their properties
According to the EU Medical Devices Directive, a medical mouthguard for adults must comply with the European standard EN 14683. Among other things, this defines types with different filter performance. When buying, therefore, pay attention to the manufacturer's labeling: a type I mouth guard has a bacterial filtering performance of at least 95 percent and is primarily suitable for private use. For medical purposes, you should choose a type II or IIR mouthguard; these types have a filtering performance of at least 98 percent. Type IIR also provides some protection against liquid splashes. Note that disposable masks provide inadequate protection against aerosols in the air you breathe. An FFP mask is therefore required as personal protective equipment ( PPE ) when handling infectious patients.
